Mortality is inevitable in animal production as death is a part of life. Higher than expected mortality, however, is detrimental to welfare and profitability. A wide assortment of diseases can contribute to increased mortality. In Dutch poultry production, a maximum 3 percent mortality during a broiler production cycle of approximately 6 weeks is expected; an average mortality of maximum 0.2 percent per week in egg producing birds is considered acceptable. It is possible to reduce structurally high mortality rates.

Why participate

  • If mortality in your company is higher than expected - defined as structurally greater than 3 percent mortality per cycle in broilers or greater than 10% per cycle in egg producing birds (reproduction and table egg).
  • Consumers may view reducing mortality as a sign of improved animal welfare.

What sampling is involved

  • Production numbers.
  • Post mortem, serology and additional diagnostics.
  • Additional sampling by FTA cards.

How you get advised

  • Analysis of production numbers and mortality.
  • Farm visit and/or on-site training of personnel.
  • Protocols for diagnosis, treatment and intervention.
  • Advice on vaccination schedules.
