Expert session: Enterococcus cecorum infections, an ongoing challenge
9/9/2025:
Join our upcoming expert session on Enterococcus cecorum infections, featuring Dr Thijs Manders. Dr Manders is a distinguished poultry veterinarian and researcher at Utrecht University and Royal GD. He specialises in bacterial diseases affecting poultry and has been investigating the virulence and pathogenesis of Enterococcus cecorum strains since 2018.
During the webinar, Dr Manders will present his research on three areas of Enterococcus cecorum:
- Virulence of E. cecorum strains
- The pathogenesis of E. cecorum infections
- In vitro and in vivo models to study E. cecorum
Thijs Manders
He graduated as a veterinarian from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at Utrecht University. After graduating, he worked as a poultry veterinarian before joining Utrecht University. Since 2018, he has collaborated closely with GD on research into Enterococcus cecorum, focusing on the virulence of different strains and the pathogenesis of infections in chickens. This extensive research culminated in his PhD thesis, titled 'Novel Insights into the Virulence and Pathogenesis of the Emerging Bacterium Enterococcus cecorum', which he successfully defended at Utrecht University.
In 2021, Dr Manders became a Diplomate of the European College of Poultry Veterinary Science (ECPVS). In early 2025, he joined GD on a part-time basis, to focus on researching various bacterial diseases in poultry, particularly E. coli and E. cecorum infections.
